Pressure Vacuum Vent (PV) valves are often referred to as breather valves or conservation valves. The latter term came into use when it was realised that evaporation losses were substantially reduced by using PV valves in lieu of open vents.
PV valves have a number of very useful characteristics that have made them standard apparatus on storage tanks:-
• They protect tanks against over and under pressure.
• They reduce evaporation losses compared to open vents.
